PUUR BELGE: Mugwump invites

Mugwump

Following the release of Mugwump’s acclaimed debut-album "Unspell" in its Deluxe Edition earlier this year, with media plaudits from the likes of Groove, Clash, SPIN, The Fader, Mixmag (Germany + UK), Nowness, Metro, Uncut, Les Inrockuptibles, Tsugi, The Line of Best Fit, Le Soir, Focus and a recent June 2016 headlining guest appearance on BBC 6 Music, the elusive Mugwump returns on Subfield/!K7 with an assorted package of mind-blowing music and an improved band line-up (drums : Lukas Melville / synths+vox+machines : Geoffroy Mugwump / bass+vox : Stephane Fedele / guitar : Thomas Stadnicki) which is heading towards a big blend of influences such as Throbbing Gristle, (Cult Belgian 80's band)TC Matic, early Talking Heads, The Stranglers, Johnny Marr, Air, Ought, Protomartyr or a darker LCD Soundystem. Mugwump keeps on joining the dots between daring dancecuts and live post-punk/disco/indierock with the Metempsycho EP, which serves as a vehicle and playground for the new formation, showcasing re-arrangements of 2 existing album songs ("Breakdown" & "Memento lies") and the new single, At the Front. Sung by Geoffroy Mugwump, "At The Front" is an eerie piece of post-punk indie pop, coming with a 10 minutes-long haunted dub version. The song signals an exciting direction for Mugwump’s second album, currently in the works and penned for 2017. Radical club facelifts by Kill The DJ/Les Disques De La Mort's Ivan Smagghe/Rupert Cross, Fabrizio Mammarella (Slow Motion/International Feel) & recent Subfield signings Front De Cadeaux round-off this exciting package.

The Germans

The Germans certainly is a band difficult to pigeonhole. After their debut ‘Elf Shot Lame Witch’ (2008), the experimental LP ‘Grote Meneren/Straffe Madammen’ (2009), and the eclectic ‘Mother Sings in Front of the House’ (2013), which featured modest cult hits such as ‘Lonely Kid’ and ‘A Romanian Crowd’, the latest release ‘Are Animals Different’ (2015) offers one long 40-minute track in their very own idiosyncratic style. Recorded in only two days by Pascal Deweze and mixed by Dijf Sanders, the album is now a subtle, then a slithery play of attractive synthscapes, avant-garde, tribal percussion, cosmic funk, freaking out psychedelia, smooth R&B singing and tight motor grooves. Despite/thanks to its highly unconventional character, ‘Are Animals Different’ was elected best Belgian album of 2015 in a musician’s poll held by Belgium’s most influential (music) magazine HUMO. Described by Drowned in Sound (UK) as the most bizarre live band ever, The Germans guarantee a hypnotic, trance-like and danceable live experience, sometimes accompanied by dancer Pieter Ampe. Memorable concerts at Pukkelpop (BE), Sonic City (BE), Eurosonic (NL), and Eindhoven Psych Lab (NL), among others, impressed fans and critics alike.

Rodolphe Coster
